THE CURRENT FOOD SYSTEM

The current food system is the complex network of activities involved in producing, processing, distributing, and consuming food. It includes everything from farming and fishing to packaging and retailing, as well as the transportation and infrastructure that makes it all possible. The current food system is facing many challenges, including population growth, climate change, and issues related to food safety and access. Some of the key issues facing the current food system include the environmental impact of industrial agriculture, the increasing use of genetically modified crops, and the need to ensure that all people have access to healthy, affordable food.

AT PLANTEL WE WORK ON...

Food insecurity: Many people, particularly in low-income communities, lack access to nutritious and affordable food.

Environmental impact: Industrial agriculture is a major contributor to climate change and is responsible for deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution.

Public health: The current food system is a major contributor to the obesity and diet-related chronic diseases epidemic.

Animal welfare: Many factory farms are criticized for inhumane treatment of animals, which is leading to more people shifting towards plant-based diets.

Income inequality: Small-scale farmers often struggle to compete with large agribusinesses, leading to a concentration of power in the food system.

Food waste: A significant amount of food is wasted throughout the food system, from farm to table.

Climate change: Agriculture is responsible for about 25% of the greenhouse gas emissions, and the food system also contributes to climate change through deforestation and land-use changes.
